Zhetysu region (kaz. Zhetisu oblysy, Jetısu oblysy) is a region in the south-east of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which was formed on June 8, 2022. The administrative center is the city of Taldykorgan.
On March 16, 2022, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during a joint meeting of the chambers of parliament, delivered a message to the people of Kazakhstan, where he highlighted the existence of problems regarding the agglomeration of the city of Alma-Ata and proposed dividing the Almaty region into two - Zhetysu and Almaty regions.

Climatic conditions
The natural conditions of the Zhetisu region include 5 climatic zones - from deserts to eternal snows. The climate is sharply continental, the average January temperature in the flat part is -15 C, in the foothills - 6-8 C; in July - +16 C and +24+25 C respectively.
Geographical data
The geographical location of the region in a favorable natural and climatic zone, the presence of fertile lands and water resources, the passage of transport corridors through its territory, as well as proximity to the territories of other countries determine the current specialization of the region. The region is a transport corridor between China and the republics of Central Asia, between Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
The Zhetisu region belongs to the regions of agricultural orientation.
There are about 125 deposits of common minerals intended for the production of a wide range of building materials.
It also has significant reserves of hydro resources and the potential of wind and solar energy, which allows the development of renewable energy sources.
The Zhetisu region has significant potential for the development of tourism. The presence of the Alakol and Balkhash lakes, the Zhongar Alatau mountain system and the Zhongar Alatau and Altyn-Emel state national natural parks in the region makes it possible to attract tourists to the region by developing beach, ecological, mountain and hiking tourism. Large rivers are Ili, Lepsi, Karatal, Aksu, Tentek, Yrgaity, Shilik and Kurty, large lakes are Balkhash, Alakol, Sasykkol, Zhalanashkol.
